Thammasat says sorry, vows action over ‘anti-monarchy’ protesters

Facing a royalist backlash from politicians and citizens, Thammasat University today published a statement apologising for a student rally in which protesters voiced critical opinions about the monarchy.

Students rallied at Thammasat University’s Rangsit Campus on Monday (August 10) to demand reform of Thai politics.
The university stated that during the past 86 years of its existence, Thammasat University had operated under the monarchy and encouraged freedoms in line with the Constitution.
It added that responsibility for the protest lay with its organisers, who had met with police beforehand to agree on protest arrangements. Thammasat had complied with those arrangements but would punish any of its students found to have done wrong during Monday’s protest.
Thammasat promised to prevent any repeat of the situation and insisted it was loyal to the constitutional monarchy.
