Electric boats being tested in Saen Saep canal before launch in 2021

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Athirat Rattanaset, has joined the testing of electric boats in the Saen Saep Canal to support the use of clean energy.

The e-boats are expected to be in service by 2021.

Athirat said that the Harbour Department had tested the operation of the San Saeb canal electric boats in a real cruise route from Phan Fa Lilat Pier to Centre pier (Pratunam), a distance of 4 kilometres, which takes 20 minutes (carrying 100 passengers and three boatmen).

During the test, the electric boat achieved a speed of 22 kilometres per hour without noise pollution. The prototype electric boat is capable of travelling 60 kilometres per charge. However, it will be tested and improved to meet the Marine Department's safety standards.

He also told the Harbour Department to work with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to solve the wastewater problem by using electric boats. It is divided into a short-term plan to deliver 18 boats with BMA workers to collect garbage along the Saen Saep Canal every day, at least 2 trips per day. The medium-term plan is to dredge the canal.

The long-term plan is to establish a sewer system along the canal, which will prevent wastewater from entering the Saen Saep Canal. The Harbour Department has already begun to install GPS on all passenger ships and is preparing to install CCTV cameras in 28 docks, a total of 188 units, including eight speed cameras to send data to the monitoring centre at the Marine Department.

The fare will be set at the current rate as people are suffering from the economic downturn.
