Police arrange forces to provide safety as rival groups rally at Democracy Monument

The Metropolitan Police Bureau has set up four regiments of police officers to provide safety to two opposing groups of protesters at Bangkok's Democracy Monument on Sunday (August 16).

Pol Maj-General Somprasong Yenthuam, deputy Metropolitan Police commander of security, said aside from providing security for the protesters, the police officers will facilitate traffic flow as well.

"Besides, we have set up patrol and investigating officers to check every corner and find information in the area to prevent any third party from committing crimes," he said. "After the protesters requested permission to hold a demonstration, police officers will allow them to hold the activity on the footpath to ensure they do not obstruct the traffic."

It was reported earlier that the Coordination Centre for Vocational Students and People Protecting the Institution were to hold their demonstration from 11am onwards, while the Free People group will hold their demonstration from 3pm to 9pm at Democracy Monument on Sunday.
