‘Bad Student’ alliance set for afternoon march against education minister

A “Bad Student” alliance plans to march to the Education Ministry at 4pm today (August 19) to protest against Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan, who they say did not show his support for the students’ activism movement.

The protest is partly generated by the government reportedly urging university rectors around the country to clamp down on student protests that raise the topic of the Monarchy and calling on teachers, lecturers and academics to abide by restrictions on political gatherings.
Since Monday, students at schools in different parts of the country have worn white ribbons and raised the three-finger salute during the national anthem in the morning as a symbol of resistance against the “dictatorship”.
The movement has gone viral on the Internet, leading to similar situations in other schools, while some teachers attempted to stop the token protests or are warning students against such behaviour.
Online human rights organisations such as the Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights and Unicef have offered their support to students who have been harassed for exercising their political viewpoints.
The Office of the Basic Education Commission was also obliged to write letters to teachers regarding the situation, asking them to encourage students to exercise their rights and freedom but under restrictions so that the situation won’t descend into violence or conflict.
