Students allowed to speak up – within limits

Students should be allowed to express their political viewpoints, the Secondary Educational Service Area Office 31 in Nakhon Ratchasima province has told all 50 schools under its jurisdiction.

However, office director Ratima Panichaurak said she is concerned that the youngsters may cross the line when expressing their opinions, though she insisted that students were not banned from holding up their hands in a “three-finger salute” in school.
The three-finger salute was made popular by the Hunger Games’ film series, in which the protagonist holds up three fingers to protest against oppression.
Ratima also said she has forwarded the letter from the Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) allowing freedom of speech to all 50 schools.
The letter says that though students are allowed to speak up, they must not hold events that are illegal and not involve outsiders.
Meanwhile, students from Boonwattana School in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district have decided to symbolically fight dictatorship by wearing white ribbons on their wrists.
The Korat No Padetkarn (Korat No Dictatorship) group announced on its Facebook page that it was holding a demonstration on Thursday (August 20) in front of the Thao Suranari statue in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district.
