Heavy rains inflict damage on five northern provinces

The five northern provinces of Nan, Phrae, Chiang Mai, Lampang and Phayao have been seriously hit by flooding caused by the recent heavy rains, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on Saturday morning (August 22).

The floods damaged 15 districts, 189 villages, and 1,413 households.
Nan suffered the most, with 960 households in six subdistricts suffering from the natural disaster and one person dying.
The department's director general, Chayapol Thitisak, explained that the recent heavy rains were caused by the monsoon trough across the North and Northeast as well as the low-pressure cell over South China Sea and the southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.
According to the Thailand Meteorological Department, people in the North, the Northeast, the Central and the East should beware of the severe conditions that could cause forest runoffs and flash floods on August 22 and 23.
