Many parts of Thailand still in grip of rainy spell

Isolated heavy rains continue in the Northeast, the East and the South regions, the Thailand Meteorological Department forecast on Sunday.

A moderate southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and Thailand, while a low pressure cell covers Laos, the department added.

The category 5 typhoon, "Maysak", over the western North Pacific, east of the Philippines, is moving to the Korean peninsula and Japan but it would not affect Thailand, the department said.

The forecast for different parts of the country:

North: Cloudy with isolated thundershowers mostly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak and Kamphaeng Phet provinces; minimum temperature 23-27 degrees Celsius, maximum 34-36°C; southwesterly winds 10-25kph.

Northeast: Cloudy with scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rains in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani provinces; minimum temperature 24-26°C, maximum 33-36°C; southwesterly winds 10-25kph.

Central: Cloudy with scattered thundershowers mostly in Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya provinces; minimum temperature 24-25°C, maximum 36-37°C; southwesterly winds 10-25kph.

East: Very cloudy with scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rains in Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces; minimum temperature 24-26°C, maximum 33-35°C; southwesterly winds 15-30kph; waves about a metre high and 1-2 metres during thundershowers.

Southern (east coast ): Partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers and isolated heavy rains mostly in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat provinces; minimum temperature 24-26°C, maximum 34-36°C; southwesterly winds 10-30kph; waves below one metre high and about one metre high offshore.

South (west coast): Partly cloudy with isolated thundershowers and isolated heavy rains in Phang Nga, Trang and Satun provinces; minimum temperature 24-26°C, maximum 32-34°C; southwesterly winds 15-30kph; waves about a metre high and about two metres high during thundershowers.

Forecast for the week:

On August 29, the strengthening southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and Thailand. Isolated heavy rains continue in the windward side of the East and the South. From August 30 to September 4, a moderate southwest monsoon will prevail over the Andaman Sea and Thailand. A monsoon trough lies across the North and the Northeast, and more rain is likely over Thailand with isolated heavy rain. The category 4 severe tropical storm, “Maysak”, over the western North Pacific, the east of the Philippines, is expected to intensify gradually, and move to the Korean peninsula and Japan. This storm, however, does not affect Thailand.
