Baht weakens after finance minister suddenly calls it quits

The baht opened at 31.18 to the US dollar today (September 2), weakening from yesterday’s close of Bt31.07.

The Thai currency would move between Bt31.10 and Bt31.30 today, Jitipol Puksamatanan, head of markets strategy at SCB Securities, said.
The strategist said US financial markets moved into positive territory on September 1. The S&P 500 increased by 0.75 per cent, supported by technology stocks.
Also, the WTI crude oil price recovered to $43 per barrel (Bt1,335), while the gold price rose to $1,970 per ounce.
The Stoxx Europe 600 decreased by 0.35 per cent.
The US Ten-Year Treasury yield was down by 4 basis points to 0.67 per cent.
Federal Reserve board member Lael Brainard said the US economy has seen high fluctuations and the Fed was ready to implement financial policies to boost the economy.
This situation weakened the dollar, while the euro strengthened to $1.20, its highest point since April 2018. At the same time, the yen decreased to 105 per US dollar, its lowest since October 2016.
In Thailand, the baht weakened as the finance minister resigned abruptly. The currency had previously strengthened in line with other Asian currencies.
