Moves to ‘switch off’ senators’ power thwarted as Democrats pull support

Opposition chief whip Sutin Klangsang said on Wednesday (September 9) that his party, Pheu Thai, had decided to back Move Forward Party’s push to amend Article 272, but the motion had to be withdrawn because the Democrat Party pulled out.

Move Forward has been pushing for changes to Article 272, so senators’ power to choose a prime minister can be “switched off”.
On Tuesday, a motion to amend the Constitution signed by 99 MPs from 13 parties was handed to House Speaker Chuan Leekpai.
The opposition-backed motion aims to amend Article 256 to pave the way for an assembly to redraft the charter.
Pheu Thai’s chief strategist, Sudarat Keyuraphan, said in a post on Tuesday that her party had resolved to push for the amendment of several articles, including 272, 159, 270, 271 and 279.
In her post she said Article 159 will be amended to block outsiders from taking the PM’s post, while Articles 270 and 271 changed to take away the Senate’s power in the country’s administration, and Article 279 will be changed so the National Council for Peace and Order can no longer control people’s rights and freedom.
