Bangkok motorists urged to avoid routes around protest this weekend
Bangkok police have advised motorists to avoid 11 routes around Thammasat University and Sanam Luang this weekend (September 19-20) due to a planned political protest at Thammasat and Government House.
“This Saturday and Sunday, avoid using the following nine roads and two bridges: Rajadamnern Nai Avenue, Lan Luang Road, Rajadamnern Klang Avenue, Din Sor Road, Rajdamnern Nok Avenue, Tanao Road, Phra Pin Klao Road, Jakkapaddipong Road, Wisut Kasat Road, Phra Pin Klao Bridge and Rama VIII Bridge,” said Pol Major-Gen Jirasan Kaewsaeng-Ake, deputy metropolitan police chief.
“People wishing to travel from Phra Nakhon district to Thonburi should use Sawan Khalok Road once they get off the Yommarat Expressway. The road will lead to Rajavithi Road and then Thonburi Bridge,” he added. “If you come from Rama VI Road, take the Liab Khlong Phadung Krungkasem Road which will lead to Yaowarat Road and then Phra Pok Klao Bridge. If you come from Rama IV Road, then take South Sathorn Road and head to Taksin Bridge to cross to Thonburi.”
Those in Thonburi wishing to travel to Phra Nakhon district should use the elevated road to get to Srirat Expressway or use Sirindhorn Road which leads to Krung Thonburi Bridge, he advised.
“If you come via the Memorial Bridge, take Jakphet, Atsadang or Bamrungmuang roads which lead to Rama I Road. Motorists from Phra Pok Klao Bridge can also use Jakphet Road which leads to Machachai Road, then enter Charoen Krung Road and finally reach Rama IV Road.”
Jirasan said at least 300 officials would be deployed to ease traffic flow in any congested areas around the rally venue.
