8 lives to go: pet-shop owner, daughter save cats from ferocious monitor lizard

A giant monitor lizard’s impossible mission to sneak into a pet shop in Suphanburi province and treat itself to some hapless felines failed – twice – as the quick-thinking owner and her daughter saved the pets in the nick of time.

Roongwaree Traipeut, 63, owner of the pet shop, said she first heard the cats creating a raucous on Wednesday and sent her daughter in to check what it was all about.

The daughter spotted the monitor lizard creeping under the pet cages and managed to drive it away with a broom.

However, the wily lizard headed to the back of the house, maybe trying to fool the humans that it was running away, while it actually sneaked up to the front door.

It saw a cat there and charged at the feline, but Roongwaree slammed the door before it could reach the cat, ending the lizard's hopes of wolfing down a special meal that day.

Rescuers called in by Roongwaree said the creature was the biggest and most ferocious monitor lizard they had ever encountered, as it whipped its tail when they tried to approach and tried to take a bite out of them when they got too close.

Eventually, the team managed to capture the hungry reptile and were set to return it to its natural habitat.
