Polls show most Thais worried about pro-democracy protests leading to violence

A majority of Thais were worried about the pro-democracy protests against the government erupting in violence, a recent survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll, found.

The study was conducted on October 19-20 on 1,336 people aged 18 and above, with various levels of education and from different occupations throughout Thailand.

Asked about uncertainty over the pro-democracy protesters' anti-government rallies, 24.48 per cent of respondents said they were worried about "third- party intervention", 34.21 per cent said they were worried that a violent situation would be created and cause conflict among people, 18.41 per cent said they were not concerned because the protesters were just expressing their demands and the government would be able to control the situation, 22.23 per cent said they were not concerned because everyone has the rights and liberties to express comments, and 0.67 per cent did not answer.

Asked about which side they would support amid political unrest, 36.45 per cent of respondents said they were undecided yet, 33.46 per cent said they had decided, 29.94 per cent said they would not make any decision, and 0.15 per cent did not answer.
