OBEC accuses teacher of ‘inciting students’ by ridiculing Thai history textbooks

OBEC accuses teacher of ‘inciting students’ by ridiculing Thai history textbooks

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has been hit with public criticism after it accused a teacher of inciting conflict by posting "political" messages on Facebook.

A friend of the accused teacher posted a copy of the official accusation on her Facebook account on Thursday, asking for help as it said the teacher would be investigated since educational instructors had to be politically neutral.

The teacher posted a message a few days earlier saying: “If you do not learn history, one of your eyes will be blinded, but if you read the history in the Education Ministry’s books, both will be blinded.”

In response, OBEC accused the teacher of intending to incite students, adding that defaming people on the opposite side of the political spectrum is undemocratic.

Thai Lawyers for Human Rights have agreed to help the teacher with the case.

The case has drawn the attention of netizens, who have criticised the Education Ministry and OBEC for contradicting its own letter by trying to silence people on the opposite side of the political spectrum.
