Democrat leader to have words with MPs who did not toe party line on charter changes

Democrat leader to have words with MPs who did not toe party line on charter changes

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Tuesday that as Democrat Party leader, he will have words with three MPs who did not vote for all charter amendment motions in line with the party.

Jurin said on Monday that all Democrat MPs had been told of the party’s stance on charter changes, adding that though everybody is entitled to their personal opinions, politically they should toe the party line.

He did not say if the MPs in question will be punished.

The Democrat leader had said earlier that his party supports charter amendment bills proposed by the coalition government and the opposition, as they will pave the way for the establishment of a charter drafting assembly. The Democrat Party does not support any changes to the first two chapters of the Constitution.

Jurin said during the discussion set for later in the day, they will touch on the fact that some party MPs still follow the ideology of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), which helped the military junta seize power in 2014.

PDRC was formed in late 2013 by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban to overthrow the Yingluck Shinawatra government and proceed with national reform through a non-elected royalist council.
