ERC keeps rates low to encourage building of new EV charging stations

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) said it will determine the new rate for charging electric vehicles (EV) once the time period for the current rate of Bt2.63 per unit is over.

ERC secretary-general Komkrit Tantravanich said the EV charging rate had been set at Bt2.63 per unit because it wanted to encourage relevant agencies to set up more EV charging stations in the provinces.

He said ERC will determine a new, more permanent rate once more stations are set up.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has been studying the setting up of new charging stations to see whether they should be a collaboration between Egat and petrol-station operators, or a standalone sub-station.

Egat assistant governor Jiraporn Sirikum added that her organisation will focus on the construction of quick-charge stations in the provinces to encourage people living upcountry to opt for electric vehicles. She also said details of the charging-stations operations should become clearer within this year.
