Governor vows to contain Klong Toei cluster within two weeks

The serious outbreak of Covid-19 in Klong Toei’s slums should be contained within two weeks, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang said on Tuesday.

A total of 304 people tested positive for Covid in Klong Toei district last month, according to health officials.

Of these, 193 cases were found in its 12 slums, while 111 live apartments adjacent to the slums.

Aswin said about 80,000 people live in Klong Toei, according to census data.

“They are at high risk of contracting the virus due to crowded living spaces that lack ventilation, with many families having to share common areas.”

On Tuesday, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) began vaccinating people in Klong Toei at two locations – Tesco Lotus Rama IV and Klong Toei Witthaya School.

“We estimate that each unit can vaccinate 500 people in the first day, and tomorrow we will add more staff plus two more units in the area, which should increase the vaccination capacity to 4,000 people per day,” said Aswin.

“To contain the cluster cases in Klong Toei, we estimated that about 70 per cent of the population, or 50,000 people, must be vaccinated.”
