More than half of over 2,000 new Covid-19 cases found in Bangkok; 19 patients die

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported 2,149 new cases and 19 deaths on Saturday.

Of the deaths, seven were in Bangkok, two each in Samut Prakan and Pathum Thani, and one each in Nakhon Sawan, Samut Songkhram, Kanchanaburi, Chonburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surin, Songkhla and Nakhon Pathom provinces.

The ages of those who succumbed to the virus ranged between 42 and 93, and most of them suffered from chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other complications.

Bangkok with 1,112 cases again leads the list with more than half the number of cases in the country, followed by 217 in Nonthaburi, 114 in Samut Prakan and 100 in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Also included in the list of infected are five Thais and five foreigners in quarantine.

The Thais included two from the Netherlands, and one each from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Cambodia. The other visitors were an Indonesian, a Myanmar national and a Briton from their respective countries, a Canadian from Kuwait and a Portuguese from the Netherlands.

Separately, 2,247 patients have recovered and been discharged in the last 24 hours.

As of Saturday, the number of confirmed cases in Thailand had risen to 81,274. Of these, 77,907 had been contracted locally, including 23,686 who were found via proactive testing, while 3,367 were returnees.

So far, 51,419 have recovered and been discharged, 29,473 patients are still in hospitals, and 382 have died.

Meanwhile, another 61,445 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, while 17,216 people were given their second shot, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in Thailand to 1,730,488.

Separately, according to Worldometer, as of 11am on Saturday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 157.53 million (up by 836,485), 134.95 million of whom have recovered, 19.3 million are active cases (108,598 in severe condition) and 3.28 million have died (up by 13,726).

Thailand ranks 99th on the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 33.41 million, followed by India 21.88 million, Brazil 15.08 million, France 5.74 million and Turkey 4.99 million.
