Bangkok gets ready for the rainy season
In a bid to prevent flooding during the rainy season, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working on improving the drainage system around electric train station construction sites.
On Sunday, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang called on related departments to investigate and instruct operators at eight construction sites to improve the drainage system, as well as have water pumps ready.
The sites in question are the TOT station in Soi Chaeng Wattana 10, Phranakhon Rajabhat station on Ramkhamhaeng Road, the station on Soi Ramkhamhaeng 13, the station in front of Rajamangala National Stadium in Hua Mark, the ones at Lam Sali intersection and Pattanakarn intersection, the Sri Udom station in front of Novotel Bangkok Bang Na and the Sri Iam station near Bang Na-Trat Road.
The BMA’s Department of Drainage and Sewerage has, meanwhile, prepared barriers along the Chao Phraya River as well as the Bangkok Noi and Maha Sawat canals. It has also placed sandbags in areas prone to flooding and is cooperating with the Royal Irrigation Department and National Water Command Centre on monitoring the water situation.
The authorities have also checked the readiness of drainage tunnels and pumping stations in Bangkok’s 50 districts, while the water level in canals has been reduced, pumps set up in flood-prone areas and sewers and canals dredged to ensure efficient drainage.
