Smiling Eriksen thanks well-wishers from hospital bed

Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen posted an Instagram message on Tuesday, thanking well-wishers for their support after he suffered a cardiac arrest during his team’s Euro 2020 opening match against Finland. Posted alongside a selfie of Eriksen smiling and giving a thumbs-up from his hospital bed was this message:

“Hello everyone

Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world. It means a lot to me and my family.

"I'm fine – under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel okay.

"Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark

Best

Christian”

The 29-year-old midfielder collapsed on the pitch in Copenhagen in the 43rd minute and had to be given CPR and defribillation as his teammates formed a protective wall around him. Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and “was gone” before being resuscitated by medics on the pitch, Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen later said.

The player and his team are now awaiting the results of tests to discover the cause and details of his cardiac arrest.
