Japan PM pledges to maintain sanctions on Russia and support Ukraine
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi pledged continued sanctions on Russia and support for Ukraine, saying Japan’s position would remain unwavering.

- The commitment was made during a virtual leaders' meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine.
- Takaichi justified the stance by stating that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions are "inseparable," necessitating cooperation among allies.
- The Prime Minister also highlighted growing military cooperation between Russia, North Korea, and China as a regional security concern.
“It is essential for the international community to unite and support Ukraine in order to bring peace to the country,” Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said while taking part online in a leaders’ meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine.
The gathering took place in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, on Monday (August 24), four and a half years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began.
Expanding military co-operation between Russia and North Korea, together with deeper collaboration between Russia and China, also featured in Takaichi’s assessment of regional security.
“The security of the Euro-Atlantic region and that of the Indo-Pacific region are inseparable, and cooperation among allied and like-minded countries is becoming more and more important,” she said.
Addressing Japan’s response to the invasion, Takaichi said that “we will continue steadily imposing sanctions on Russia and supporting Ukraine”, adding: “We always stand with Ukraine, and this stance is unwavering.”
