Pattaya hopes for US carrier boost as police tighten checks
Pattaya businesses expect a boost from nearly 5,000 US sailors, while police step up patrols over prostitution and exploitation risks.
Businesses in Pattaya are hoping the arrival of the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln will provide a much-needed economic lift, while local authorities step up policing amid concerns over illegal prostitution, sexual exploitation and public health.
The carrier is due to arrive at Laem Chabang Port near Pattaya on Wednesday (September 2), accompanied by two other US Navy vessels.
Nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines will be given shore leave to rest and recuperate following more than 200 days at sea, according to Thai officials.
Police increase patrols ahead of arrival
Pattaya police are preparing additional patrols along the city’s main beachfront and in its nightlife districts.
Operations conducted over the weekend resulted in between 40 and 50 people being detained on suspicion of prostitution-related offences, officials said.
Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo acknowledged that enforcement remained challenging because people could solicit customers in public places without the authorities immediately becoming aware.
Prostitution is illegal in Thailand, although the commercial sex industry remains highly visible in parts of major tourism centres, including Pattaya and Bangkok.
Businesses expect short-term spending boost
Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches estimated that each US service member could spend between 1,000 and 3,000 baht a day, depending on how much time they spend ashore and whether they stay overnight.
Shore leave is expected to be staggered, meaning that not all personnel will leave the ships simultaneously. Poramase said the visit should help stimulate Pattaya’s economy in the short term.
Hotels, restaurants, bars, transport operators, retailers and other tourism businesses are expected to benefit from the influx.
Lisa Hamilton, president of the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association, described news of the port call as a source of hope for local operators. She said business conditions in 2026 were the weakest she had witnessed during more than 20 years in the city.
However, Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, president of the Association of Chonburi Tourism Federation, said the overall commercial effect would depend on where the sailors and Marines chose to spend their shore leave.
Some personnel could travel to Bangkok rather than remain in Pattaya, limiting the amount of spending retained by local businesses. Pattaya has more than 300,000 rooms across its accommodation market, according to the tourism association.
Concerns over exploitation and public health
The prospect of thousands of personnel arriving in a short period has also raised concerns that some spending could flow into Pattaya’s illegal sex industry.
Pipatpong Fakfare, an associate professor at Bangkok University’s School of Humanities and Tourism Management, warned that a sharp increase in customers could raise the risk of sexual exploitation and the transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
He said reports of mental-health strain among personnel aboard the carrier added another concern that should be considered by authorities and businesses preparing for the visit.
Carrier arrives after prolonged Middle East deployment
USS Abraham Lincoln left its home port of San Diego in November 2025 and was later redirected to the Middle East to support US military operations during the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Democratic lawmakers have described its time at sea as a modern-day record for a continuous deployment without a port call.
Military-focused publications cited by Reuters have reported declining morale, worsening conditions and incidents involving attempts to jump overboard during the extended mission.
Pattaya’s historical relationship with US military visitors stretches back to the Vietnam War, when the former fishing community developed rapidly as American service members travelled there for rest and recreation.
The latest port call therefore presents the city with both an economic opportunity and a safeguarding challenge: supporting legitimate tourism businesses while enforcing Thai law and protecting workers, residents and visitors from exploitation and other risks.
