Thailand warns of heavy rain and hail as unstable weather continues

Bangkok and other regions face flash flood risks, while rainfall is forecast to increase in the Central region, East and South on October 9–13.

  • Thailand's Meteorological Department has issued a warning for unstable weather in upper Thailand, forecasting thundershowers, gusty winds, hail, and heavy rain.
  • The warning affects the North, Central (including Bangkok), East, and South regions, with authorities cautioning about potential flash floods and forest run-off.
  • Mariners are advised to navigate with caution due to stronger winds and waves exceeding two meters in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand.
  • Rainfall is expected to increase again from October 9–13 in the East, the Central region including Bangkok, and the South.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning at 5pm on Tuesday (October 6, 2026) for unstable weather in upper Thailand through the following day.

The forecast includes thundershowers, gusty winds, hail and isolated heavy to very heavy rain.

The regional outlook is as follows:

  • Tuesday: The North, the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, the East and the upper South are expected to be affected. Rainfall in the Northeast is forecast to decrease.
  • Wednesday: The western North, the Central region and the South are expected to be affected.

Thailand warns of heavy rain and hail as unstable weather continues

The conditions are linked to a high-pressure system, or cold air mass, from China extending over the North, Northeast and upper Central region during the late rainy season.

Easterly and south-easterly winds are carrying moisture from the South China Sea and Gulf of Thailand over upper Thailand, while the south-west monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand.

The TMD warned that heavy and accumulated rainfall could cause flash floods and forest run-off, particularly on foothill slopes near waterways and in low-lying areas, where standing floodwater is also possible.

People should avoid open spaces and areas beneath large trees or unstable billboards.

Stronger winds and higher waves are forecast in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand, with waves exceeding two metres in areas affected by thundershowers.

Mariners should check their routes, navigate with caution and avoid sailing through those areas.

Rainfall is expected to increase from October 9–13 in the East, the Central region, including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, and the South, with isolated heavy to very heavy rain.

To stay safe and reduce potential impacts, people should carefully plan their daily activities and journeys during these periods and closely monitor the TMD’s forecasts and announcements.
