The Office of the Permanent Secretary for Interior has launched an illustrated book to commemorate the 40th birthday of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya.
Titled “Nariratana Hattasilp”, the book documents her royal duties and presents her vision for sustaining, preserving and building on traditional knowledge of Thai textiles and handicrafts, connecting it with contemporary design and sustainable development.
The book covers her royal duties in 2026, her work in Thailand’s four regions and earlier royal duties between 2019 and 2025.
It also includes material on textiles, contemporary Thai handicrafts and cultural heritage that has been revived.
Its central theme is how the knowledge of weavers, craftspeople, entrepreneurs and communities can be developed into products that meet the needs of today’s market.
This ranges from designing patterns and colour schemes and improving production techniques to building brands and adding value to products.
The approach shows that Thai textiles are not limited to clothing for ceremonies or special occasions.
They can also be developed into products that are accessible to consumers in everyday life, while adding value to local knowledge and expanding income opportunities for communities.
One of the key royal initiatives featured in the book is “Fun with Thai Fabrics”, which encourages the wearing of Thai textiles in everyday life.
The initiative promotes textiles suitable for all genders, ages and a wide range of occasions, while encouraging weavers and entrepreneurs to create contemporary designs that appeal to a new generation of consumers.
Adapting Thai textiles to consumer behaviour and the fashion market is therefore important for creating business opportunities.
These range from designing distinctive products and establishing a clear brand identity to expanding sales channels, with the aim of directing income back to producers and the communities where the products originate.
Another approach, “Sustainable Fashion”, focuses on natural materials, environmentally friendly production and reviving traditional knowledge so it can serve a purpose in contemporary life.
“Nariratana Hattasilp” is both an illustrated record of the Princess’s royal duties and a collection of knowledge and stories.
It traces the transition of Thai textiles and handicrafts from their roots in local knowledge to contemporary fashion and the creation of economic value.
The central aim is to develop products that meet market demand while retaining each area’s identity and cultural value, so that traditional knowledge can remain part of everyday life, generate income and continue to be passed on to future generations.
