DDPM warns of flooding in southern Thailand as heavy rain continues

High river levels affect low-lying areas in Suphan Buri and Nakhon Pathom, while large and medium-sized reservoirs nationwide are 84% full.

  • Thailand's disaster agency (DDPM) has warned of continued heavy rain in the country's southern region, leading to a risk of flash floods and rapid run-off.
  • The flood risk is compounded by high water levels, with nationwide reservoirs at 84% capacity and several major dams near or over their storage limits.
  • Authorities are also monitoring high tides expected from October 27-31, which could further worsen flooding by impeding water drainage.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation warned on Sunday (October 25, 2026) of continuing heavy rain in southern Thailand and thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning in parts of the Northeast and North.

The warnings formed part of the department’s daily monitoring summary to support disaster management.

Run-off and river levels

  • The Tha Chin River is above bank level in Suphan Buri and Nakhon Pathom, affecting low-lying areas outside flood embankments and riverside areas.

Reservoir levels

  • Large and medium-sized reservoirs nationwide are holding water equivalent to 84% of their combined capacity and can accommodate another 12,378 million cubic metres.
  • Kaeng Krachan, Srinagarind, Naruebodindrachinta, Thap Salao and Vajiralongkorn dams are close to full capacity.
  • Nong Pla Lai Dam is holding water above capacity and has reached its storage limit.

High tides

  • High tides should be closely monitored from October 27 to 31. Water releases must be timed in line with the tidal cycle.

Short-term forecast

  • Light rain is forecast in Bangkok, surrounding provinces and the East on the afternoon of October 25.
  • Moderate to very heavy rain is forecast in parts of the South, with warnings of flash floods and rapid run-off from forested areas.
