Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Quang Hai scored seven minutes apart after the interval, leaving Thailand with a two-goal deficit before Wednesday’s return match at My Dinh.

Thailand, ranked 94th in the world, faced 99th-ranked Vietnam at 8pm on Saturday (August 22, 2026) in the first leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 football final at Rajamangala National Stadium.

Vietnam created the first chance six minutes into the match, launching a counter-attack that ended with Nguyen Xuan Son shooting into the hands of Kampon Phatomakkakul.

Thailand nearly took the lead in the 20th minute when Kakana Khamyok turned inside the penalty area and flicked the ball to Teerasak Poeiphimai, whose shot was blocked.

Chaiyaphon Otton then sent the follow-up wide.

Thailand came even closer in the 30th minute when Seksan Ratree’s long-range effort struck the crossbar and bounced behind.

Vietnam threatened in the 33rd minute when Do Hoang Hen found Nguyen Dinh Bac, but his shot was gathered by Kampon Phatomakkakul.

Thailand had another opportunity in first-half stoppage time.

Kakana Khamyok’s shot was blocked, and Teerasak Poeiphimai collected the loose ball, only to fire wide and be flagged offside.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time.

Thailand continued to create chances after the interval.

In the 50th minute, Sarach Yooyen’s corner was cleared into the path of Waris Choolthong, whose shot was redirected by Nattapong Sayriya before being blocked behind.

Vietnam took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute from a counter-attack, with Nguyen Dinh Bac setting up Nguyen Hai Long to score.

Vietnam doubled their advantage in the 69th minute when Nguyen Quang Hai met Do Hoang Hen’s cross with a first-time volley to make it 2-0.

Thailand almost pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when Kakana Khamyok drove forward and shot, but his effort was blocked behind.

Vietnam threatened again in the 86th minute as Nguyen Dinh Bac hit a long-range right-footed shot against the crossbar, with the ball bouncing behind.

No further goals followed, and Thailand lost 2-0 to Vietnam.

Thailand will face Vietnam in the second leg of the ASEAN Cup 2026 final at My Dinh at 8pm on Wednesday (August 26, 2026).
