Thailand's women's volleyball team will face an undefeated Japan in the semi-finals of the 2026 AVC Continental Championship.
The tournament's champion will qualify directly for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
A victory for Thailand would end Japan's unbeaten run in the tournament and keep their own Olympic qualification bid alive.
Japan has a dominant recent record against Thailand, having won five of their last six international meetings.
Defending champions Thailand will attempt to halt Japan’s unbeaten run when the Asian rivals meet in the semi-finals of the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship at 4.15pm on Saturday (August 29, 2026).
The match will be played at Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in China, where the 12-team continental tournament has been taking place since August 21.
The champions will qualify directly for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, while the top three finishers will secure places at the 2027 FIVB Women’s World Championship.
Japan advanced without dropping a set, beating Chinese Taipei 25-14, 25-21 and 25-13.
Victory on Saturday would send Thailand into the final and keep alive their bid to retain the Asian title and claim the direct Olympic place.
Japan dominate recent meetings
Japan have won five of the teams’ six most recent international meetings. Thailand’s only victory in that sequence came at the 2023 Asian Championship, where they prevailed in five sets before going on to win the title.

Japan’s strengths lie in their disciplined defence and quick, structured play. Thailand will need accurate setting, varied combination attacks and fewer unforced errors to disrupt their opponents’ rhythm.
