Thailand topple Japan to reach Asian final with Olympic place at stake

Thailand’s women’s volleyball team moved within one victory of a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after defeating Japan 3-1 in the semi-finals of the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Continental Championship.

The defending champions prevailed 25-21, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-20 at Tianjin Olympic Center Gymnasium in China on Saturday (August 29), securing a place in Sunday’s final.

Thailand delivered a composed all-round performance in the opening set, combining effective wing attacks, disciplined defence, blocking and serving to take it 25-21.

They maintained their organisation in the second set and capitalised on errors from Japan to win 25-20 and move two sets ahead.

Japan responded strongly in the third, opening a 10-4 lead before taking the set 25-20. Thailand regrouped in the fourth and held their nerve to close out another 25-20 win and complete the victory.

The result ended Japan’s unbeaten run in Tianjin. Japan had reached the semi-finals with four consecutive straight-set victories, while Thailand had also won all four of their previous matches, conceding only one set.

Japan had won five of the teams’ six most recent international meetings before Saturday’s contest. Thailand’s only victory in that sequence came at the 2023 Asian Championship, where they defeated Japan in five sets before going on to claim the title.

By reaching the final, Thailand have secured a place at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup, as the tournament’s three medal-winning teams qualify. The Asian champions will also earn the continent’s direct berth at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Thailand will face either hosts China or Iran in the gold-medal match on Sunday (August 30). The final is scheduled for 5.45pm Thailand time, or 6.45pm in Tianjin.
