Energy ministry sets bigger increases for alternative fuels

Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan yesterday ordered Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) to speed up its energy-saving campaigns to cope with rising energy prices.

He said the department should encourage people to save all types of energy. Currently, the cost of imported energy is as high as 90 per cent of total domestic energy usage, or Bt1 trillion a year.

DEDE director-general Krairit Nilkuha said the department had reported the progress of its revised alternative energy plan to the minister. The department has revised its target for alternative energy use to increase to 25 per cent of total energy consumption in 2022, up from the previous target of 20 per cent. The revised plan is expected to be completed within this year.

In 2022, energy generated from solar should increase to 1,500 megawatts (MW), up from the previous estimation of 500 MW. The percentage generated by wind is now targeted to increase to 1,600 MW, up from the previous estimate of 800 MW. In addition, biomass and waste will be pushedto generate more electric power.
