Come join Energy Car Free Day

Come join Energy Car Free Day

Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan today joined a number of city commuters in using public service on the Energy Car Free Day.

In coming to office on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road, he boarded the skytrain from the Siam BTS station to the Mo Chit station. Upon his arrival, he joined a bicycle caravan launched to promote bicycling.  The 2-km bicycle ride, joined by the ministry's officials, the general public and RS artists, started from the back of Chatuchak Park to Energy Complex.

Pichai said that under the 20-year energy conservation plan (2011-2030), Thailand targets to reduce energy consumption by 25 per cent. Much of the reduction is expected to come from the transport sector which consumes 35 per cent of total consumption.

He urged all to join the "Energy Car Free Day" by using public transport services or car pool, to reduce fuel consumption and global warming impacts.

It is estimated that on average a vehicle will release 193 g of carbon emission for every one kilometre. (Petrol-driven vehicles release 8.8kg for every four litres, while diesel-driven vehicles 10 kg.)

"If only 10 per cent of 4 million vehicles in Bangkok is parked at home and the owners use public services once a week, this should save fuel by 1.6 million litres a day or about Bt64 million (based on the octane-95 price at Bt40 per litre). This will help cut carbon emission by 3,520 tonnes per day."
