Tammy's title defence hit by injury

Tammy's title defence hit by injury

Tamarine Tanasugarn's bid to defend her title next week in Osaka could be off after she aggravated her elbow injury during a semi-final in the M3D Kofu International Open yesterday.

The top seed felt a recurrence of her right-elbow injury at the start of the second set against Mandy Minella of Luxembourg before eventually losing 6-3 6-2.
“I couldn’t keep the ball in play and the pain hit me in the second set,’’ said Tamarine. She caught a train to Osaka after the match to see a doctor ahead of the WTA event, where she is reigning champion after beating Kimiko Date Krumm in last year’s historic showdown of the oldest finalists in WTA history.
“I prefer to see a doctor in Osaka and give myself a shot in the tournament. At this point I will just do what I can do,’’ said the 34-year-old Thai.
