Thais' average online spending at Bt19,600

Online shoppers in Thailand are sticking to the same online holiday shopping budget they set for themselves last year, with half planning to spend the same amount as they did in 2010, according to the Visa Holiday Season Online Shopping Study.

The study revealed that 33 per cent of respondents plan to set aside a higher online holiday shopping budget this year, while 18 percent said they would spend less this year.

Travel and clothing top the online holiday shopping list: Holiday accommodations (21 per cent) was the most desired Christmas gift, followed by watches (18 per cent) and clothes, bags and electronic devices (13 per cent each).

Conducted in October 2011, it covered more than 4,000 online shoppers from Australia, mainland China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand on their purchasing attitudes and behaviours across the December travel period, Christmas and New Year’s. Five hundred respondents were polled in Thailand.
Nearly all Thai shoppers (92 per cent) who have purchased items or services online in the past six months are planning to purchase an item or service online for the year-end holidays. On average, Thais plan to spend Bt19,600 online during the festive season.
The top three reasons for Thai shoppers spending online during the holidays are the ability to find and compare items easily (77 per cent), being able to compare prices and save money (59 per cent), the ability to save time and the convenience of being able to shop at any time of the day (56 per cent each).
“Shoppers indicated they are primarily motivated to spend online by the convenience and substantial cost savings associated with buying on the web. With the many online sales going on during the year-end period, bargain hunters can use this opportunity to stretch their dollar on gifts and stock up for the New Year,” said Somboon Krobteeranon, Country Manager, Thailand, Visa.

Shopping while at work becoming the new norm:  More than one in three (36 per cent) respondents said they would make their holiday purchases while at the office, while others prefer to multi-task and shop while watching TV (16 per cent). The majority said they would shop at home (89 per cent).
