Thai online shoppers maintain holiday season spending

Online shoppers in Thailand are sticking to the same online holiday shopping budget they set for themselves last year, with half planning to spend the same amount as they did in 2010.

The Visa Holiday Season Online Shopping Study revealed that 33 percent of respondents surveyed plan to set aside a higher online holiday shopping budget this year, while 18 percent said they would spend less this year .

The survey, conducted by Visa in October 2011, surveyed more than 4,000 online shoppers from Australia, mainland China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand on their purchasing attitudes and behaviors across the December travel period, Christmas and New Year’s. Five hundred respondents were polled in Thailand.

Nearly all Thai shoppers (92%) who have purchased items or services online in the past six months are planning to purchase an item or service online for the year-end holidays.  On average, Thais plan to spend Bt19,600 online during the festive season.

The top three reasons for Thai shoppers spending online during the holidays are the ability to find and compare items easily (77 percent), being able to compare prices and save money (59 percent), the ability to save time and the convenience of being able to shop at any time of the day (56 percent each).

“Shoppers indicated they are primarily motivated to spend online by the convenience and substantial cost savings associated with buying on the web. With the many online sales going on during the year-end period, bargain hunters can use this opportunity to stretch their dollar on gifts and stock up for the New Year,” said Somboon Krobteeranon, Country Manager, Thailand, Visa.

“No matter who they’re buying for this holiday, Visa cardholders can enjoy added security online when they use an identity authentication service like Verified by Visa,” said Somboon.

Other key findings from the Visa Holiday Season Online Shopping Study:

Most Thai shoppers buy up to five Christmas gifts online: Three in five respondents from Thailand said they planned to purchase between one and five Christmas gifts online. Close to one in three (30 percent) respondents said they would purchase between six to ten Christmas gifts online

Most re-gift unwanted presents: While 37 percent of survey respondents said they would just set aside a Christmas present they disliked, more than half of survey respondents (54 percent) said they would either give away a Christmas present they disliked to someone else whom they think will find it useful or would give it away at another suitable occasion.

Shopping while at work becoming the new norm:  More than one in three (36 percent) respondents said they would make their holiday purchases while at the office, while others prefer to multi-task and shop while watching TV (16 percent). The majority said they would shop at home (89 percent).

Travel and clothing top the online holiday shopping list: Holiday accommodations (21 percent) was the most desired Christmas gift, followed by watches (18 percent) and clothes, bags and electronic devices (13 percent each).

The 2011 Visa Holiday Season Online Shopping Study: Fieldwork was conducted by The Nielsen Company on behalf of Visa from October 21 -31, 2011. A total of 4,033 target respondents were surveyed. These were adults aged 18-55 years old who have purchased something online in the past six months and intend to purchase items online in preparation for the 2011 year-end holiday season.
