Fujifilm aims for a lift in cosmetics sales

Anti-ageing Astalift makes Thai debut after overwhelming success in Japan

Fujifilm Corporation is diversifying into the cosmetics business in Thailand, Nozomu Hashimoto, the new managing director of Fujifilm (Thailand), said.
Named “Astalift”, the new cosmetics brand is a part of Fujifilm’s latest diversified business. Astalift series is a comprehensive anti-ageing skincare brand, developed by using its broad spectrum of core technologies accumulated over many years of research and development of photosensitive materials. These distinctive technologies include the findings of its collagen research, anti-oxidisation technology and nano technology.
The products have received overwhelming support from women since their launch in Japan in 2007.
Hashimoto said that the launch of “Astalift” in Thailand would be either through Fujifilm (Thailand) or a local distributor.
Fujifilm Corporation recently opened the “Astalift” shop in Singapore in September this year after launching the brand in many markets around Asia, including in Japan, China, and Hong Kong.
Hashimoto took over as managing director of the Thai operations in October this year with the mission to expand all kinds of Fujifilm products, including digital camera, photo-imaging products such as colour film and paper, graphic arts, and medical products.
He wants to encourage equal growth of all Fujifilm products and at a faster pace than at present.
Fujifilm (Thailand) expects to achieve about Bt2.5 billion in total sales in fiscal year 2011, ending March next year. Digital cameras account for one-third of the business, while less than 20 per cent is from medical products.
“My target is to increase the contribution from medical goods to more than 20 per cent,” said Hashimoto.
Before Thailand, Hashimoto was a manager at Fujifilm’s headquarters in Japan responsible for overseas markets for its medical division.
“I just left China four years ago after being there for five and a half years as marketing manager for photo-imaging products. Staying in Thailand is my second experience in a foreign country,” said Hashimoto.
He said that Thailand is quite a big market for Fujifilm products not only in terms of population, but also economy and the imaging industry.
Hashimoto said that the earthquake in the northeastern part of Japan on March 11 this year has had a severe impact on the Japanese. In Thailand, there was the flood crisis. Both countries are presented with a very difficult choice for future development.
