Venice Film Festival, Architecture Biennale name new heads

The new heads of the Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, and the Venice Architecture Biennale, David Chipperfield, were announced Tuesday by the organising committee of the two events.

Barbera, the current director of Italy's National Cinema Museum in Turin, takes over from Marco Muller, who has directed the Venice Film Festival since 2004, the Biennale di Venezia said in a statement.
The appointment marks a return to Venice for Barbera, who headed the world's oldest cinema competition from 1998 to 2002. Barbera's contract lasts for four years.
Next year's Venice Film Festival, the 69th, will run from August 29 to September 8.
British architect Chipperfield, a recipient of many awards - including in 2009 the Order of Merit of the German Federal Republic - takes over from Japanese-born architect Kazuyo Sejima as Director of the Architecture Sector of the Biennale.
Chipperfield will be responsible for curating the next edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale - also known as the International Architecture Exhibition - which is scheduled for August 29-November 25, 2012.
