Remembering the events of March 11

Remembering the events of March 11

A number of organisations are holding activities to mark the first anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The events, which include a photo exhibition and film screening, are also tokens of thanks to the hospitality of the Thai peopl

On Sunday, the Thai public is invited to attend a free screening at the Paragon Cineplex where three films, the documentaries “Fukushima Hula Girls” and “Light Up Nippon” as well as a feature “Rock Wanko No Shima”, will be shown. All three films come with English subtitles and are being brought to the screen by the Japanese Embassy, the Japan Foundation and World Film Festival of Bangkok to express gratitude to Thais.
The screenings start at 1pm but filmgoers are advised to register at 11pm as tickets are limited. Filmgoers are also encouraged to join a brief memorial service to honour the victims of disasters at 2.46pm, the same time as the ceremony in Japan.
World Film Festival of Bangkok’s deputy director Dusit Silakong says the films are mustsees and this is a rare chance to view them, especially the documentaries. Dusit warns that the feature “Rock Wanko No shima” is very moving and the audience is likely to find themselves in tears.
Mitsubishi Corporation, Asahi Shimbun newspaper and the Japanese Embassy are also staging “East Japan Earthquake Press Photo Exhibition” at the first floor of CentralWorld until March 14 to thank Thai people for their help. The exhibition, which features photos taken by journalists in the disasterhit areas, is also set to travel to Indonesia and South Korea..
Takashi Kasuya, the director of Ashahi Shimbun, says that no one will ever forget the terrible events of March 11 and the newspaper did its duty in communicating to everyone what really happened on that day.
“Then we used our pages as a photo exhibition to communicate through photos. We have so many photographers in the field, we could manage to record all stories.”
The exhibition is open daily from 11am to 9pm.
