No let-up in corporate energy

No let-up in corporate energy

The Energy Ministry is keeping its foot on the pedal in the drive to encourage the use of energy-saving equipment by businesses through the availability of corporate tax refunds.

Krairit Nilkuha, director-general of the Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency Department, yesterday said the agency continued to promote the use of such equipment in the corporate sector as part of its overall energy-saving project, which started in January 2011 and runs until the end of this year.
Some 300 items of energy-saving equipment, or 5,200 models in total, fall under the government’s project, he said.
Under the scheme, companies that use any of these items can receive tax refunds to the tune of 25 per cent of the expenditure on the equipment.
“So far, enterprises have had tax refunded on energy-saving equipment worth more than Bt100 billion.” Krairit added that the department would, however, continue to encourage enterprises to use more energy-saving equipment.
Meanwhile, the agency yesterday joined with Thai Nippon Steel Engineering and Construction Corp for a pilot project involving the use of superconductor technology at its facility to save energy.
Under the project, the company will invest about Bt870,000 in switching to the technology in a bid to increase the efficiency of electricity circulation. This is expected to enable Thai Nippon to save Bt50,000 per month on energy, breaking even on the investment within 18 months.
The department is also planning to open a centre or showroom for displaying energy-saving equipment under the government’s promotional scheme, Krairit said.
This would provide a more convenient way for businesses to view and understand the models covered by the scheme.
