Ford's new Rayong plant to start up in late June

Ford Thailand's passenger-car plant in Rayong will formally start up production on June 26.

Saroj Kiatfuengfoo, vice president of marketing, sales and service, said yesterday that the US$450-million (Bt14-billion) plant would focus on producing 1,000 units per month of the all-new Focus model. Later it will add the EcoSport and other models. The plant will be inaugurated  next Thursday.
Ford has witnessed high orders for Ranger pickup trucks, while it will start delivering other models such as the 1.5-litre Fiesta to dealers on May 10.
But the production of pickups has run short of parts, as many factories for components have yet to resume full operation after the flood struck last year, while demand is higher than expected.
Ford has provided assistance to its suppliers in many ways so the situation should improve this month, Saroj said.
The US-based auto-maker recently reported its best-ever retail sales for the month of March, helping to finish the company’s all-time best quarterly performance.
Last month, Ford’s overall retail sales rose 28 per cent year on year to 3,305 units – representing its best-ever total for the month – led by the Fiesta subcompact and redesigned Ranger.
Retail sales during the January-March period increased 48 per cent year on year to 9,961 units.
