Disappointing tourist growth for Laos
Lao Tourism reports that it has missed its target as the total number of tourists increased by only 8 per cent over 2010, going from 2.5 million in 2010 to 2.7 million in 2011, well below the target of 2.8 million. The reason could be related to the global economic downturn and flooding in Thailand, as that country is traditionally a transit point for visitors to Laos. Overall, the number of tourist arrivals has risen consistently from 1993 to 2011, with an average annual growth rate of 20.36 per cent. The Lao government is expecting 2.9 millions of tourists this year.
