IP Dept wins Global Anti-Counterfeiting Award

The Global Anti-Counterfeiting Group has given an award to the Commerce Ministry's Intellectual Property Department in recognition of its crackdown on piracy.

The GACG is an informal network of national and regional intellectual-property protection and enforcement organisations that have a strong international dimension to their activities. Its 22 members cover nearly 40 countries including Belgium, India, France, the United States and China, and maintain direct informal contact with many more national and industry associations.

In its 14th annual event, the group delivered Global Anti-Counterfeiting Awards in four categories – national public bodies, international public organisations, companies/commercial organisations, and associations.

The department won the award in the national public bodies category, despite reports of widespread piracy in Thailand. Pop diva Lady Gaga recently mentioned her plan to buy a fake Rolex watch while here for a concert.

Pajchima Tanasanti, director-general of the department, said the crackdown was the agency’s priority. In cooperation with other agencies such as the National Police Office, the Department of Special Investigation and the Customs Department, the Intellectual Property Department forms a national task force.

"The award brings pride and confirms the success of the department and other agencies, of which concerted efforts are globally recognised.

This award will inspire the department and others to further their crackdown activities," she said.

The 2012 awards ceremony will be held in Paris on June 7, World Anti-Counterfeiting Day.
