Asean and Indian ministers discuss biodiversity

Asean regards biodiversity conservation as a predominant issue in global and regional cooperation, Brunei's minister of development said during an address at the Asean-India Environment Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi recently.

In his statement, Pehin Suyoi said that as one of the richest regions in terms of biodiversity and natural resources, Asean considers biodiversity as one of the key areas of importance in regional and global environmental cooperation, he said.
He also said that being Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, Asean member states committed in contributing to global efforts in conserving biodiversity.
In commenting on Asean-India relations, the development minister said ties between the regional bloc and India for the last 20 years have grown rapidly.
This was reflected by the significant progress made in several cooperation activities, including environment.
The meeting had issued the New Delhi Asean-India Ministerial Statement on Biodiversity, reaffirming the importance of biological resources to the people of Asean and India and called for measures to be taken to meet the goals of biodiversity conservation.
