Between doodles, Stephff gets wed

Amaraporn Petanont is now "Mrs Stephff", having recently married The Nation's editorial cartoonist in a traditional Thai wedding, only to discover that his real name is Stephane Peray and he's French!

As an assistant lawyer, she could easily have sued, but her nickname is Angel and they plan to live happily ever after. About 200 friends and family gathered for the reception at Anna, the restaurant and gallery on Soi Pipat, including Nation president Pana Janviroj and Angel’s boss Sutharn Valaisathien. Six of Stephff’s nieces and nephews flew over from France.
Stephff is now back at work at his drawing-painting-and-tribal-art gallery in Supreme Ville at 38/56 Yenakart Road. He’s probably doing more of those illustrations from his “dark side” that we won’t let him put in the newspaper because they scare the children.
Stephff’s planning more exhibitions, a range of T-shirts, a comic book about farang, a movie script and “a new concept in editorial cartoons”.
Uh-oh.

 Pretty vacant

If you’re going to read JK Rowling’s new book “The Casual Vacancy”, the trick is to forget you ever even heard of Harry Potter. That’s the consensus among ordinary folks online who have already read Rowling’s first novel “for grown-ups”.
The word went out even before the book went on sale – no magic for pre-teenagers, only misery for a small English town. Yet people are still surprised and disappointed that there are no wizards or unicorns in it.
“Expectations were high that JKR could transition from Harry to adults. Disappointed with the results,” C Fazio lamented on Amazon.com, where the novel has a mediocre rating of 2.8 out of a possible 5.
A lot of fans just gave up. “There is NO WAY I can make myself finish reading this dull, dreary, depressing book,” writes Sweet Girl. “Only halfway through and there are 47 characters thus far!”
Over at Audible.com, Potter fans are running away from “Casual Vacancy” in droves. Sabrina writes that Rowling is still her favourite author, but “this book is horrible”.
