The fallacy of 'us and them'

The fallacy of 'us and them'

Re: "Just who is it that lacks feeling here?", Letters, October 23.

Nuntanit makes a good point when he notes that humans are also animals. Think about it.
We call clams animals, even though they are at such a low level of development I don’t know if they have any awareness. And we call apes animals, though they have 99-per-cent the same genetic makeup as humans. Yet we don’t call humans animals! But certainly apes – or even mice for that matter – are much more similar to humans than they are to clams. But, by telling ourselves there is a tremendous difference between “us” and “them”, we are able to justify the terrible things we do to non-humans.
Humans are only fooling themselves.
