Is it okay to eat rocks?

Is it okay to eat rocks?

Re: All the letters about vegetarianism

I have been following the debate about vegetarianism vs meat-eating with increasing confusion. What’s all this business about plants being conscious? If they’re conscious, why don’t they try to communicate with us? Or are they too busy playing with their iPads and mobile phones, just like everybody else nowadays?
I have always felt bad about eating animals, even though they are already dead. I don’t like the idea of killing any living being, although I have often wanted to kill my husband Horace when he comes stumbling in stinking drunk at 5 in the morning, bellowing and braying bawdy songs. If plants are conscious, that means we can’t avoid killing living beings even if we become vegetarians.
So what about rocks? Are they conscious too? If not, maybe we could eat them. Of course, there is the problem of their rough texture and making them taste good. Would they become more palatable if we ground them up and added ketchup?
And who is this Osho fellow? He sounds Japanese. Is he related to Oishi?
The Nation really needs to do a series of feature articles on this topic to bring its readers up to speed. I hope it turns out that rocks are conscious, because I really am not keen on eating them, and if they are conscious, that would make a good excuse. But in that case, what CAN we eat without taking life? Is it possible to invent some kind of synthetic food?
Hoping for some enlightenment on this confusing topic.
