Clearing out the cupboards

Clearing out the cupboards

A passionate shopper offers her vintage brand name bags and shoes to the next generation

A sprightly septuagenarian who’s amassed more possessions than she knows what to do with in a very fulfilling life, Sangchan Khoosuwan was finally persuaded by her family that her “junk” could well be another person’s “gold”. So the 73-year-old got down to the hard task of sorting, arranging and categorising and last month opened a small shop in Sahakorn Village, where Sangchan and hubby Kamol also live nearby.
Before his retirement, Kamol worked for a multi-national firm and Sangchan always accompanied him on overseas trips, whiling away the hours he spent in meetings by visiting the shops. Over the years, she collected quite a stash of items and while she’s passed on a great deal to her siblings, children and grandchildren, she freely admits that she has more than closet space allows.
“I used to set up a stall at weekends but now, since I have nothing to do, my daughter found me a small retail space and I decided to open a shop,” she says. “About 80 per cent of the stuff comes from my wardrobe, while my daughters and grandchildren have also contributed accessories and toys to fill up the shelves.”
Take Your Time, as the shop is called, offers fashion from the ’70s to the present day and has an interior designed by her youngest daughter, who works as a graphic designer. It’s even furnished with items Sangchan no longer uses - an old wooden table from her kitchen, comfy armchair, wooden cabinets and shelves.
Fashionistas will love the genuine leather handbags, shoulder bags and wallets by such well-known brands as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Celine, Bally, Longchamp, Prada, Fendi, Harrods and Polo Jeans.
The fashion corner also offers fine shirts finished with lace and Chinese-style collars made from silk and cotton, which Sangchan bought in China, along with jeans, shirts, belts, neckties, cotton pants, skirts, jackets and vintage dresses.
There are also high heels, canvas shoes, as well as casual shoes for men and women, Younger shoppers will be delighted by the range of earrings, rings, necklaces, wristwatches, bracelets, hair bands and hats on offer.
Sangchan is also selling a small section of home decor accessories including a lamp from Germany, vases, mugs, saucers, silver tableware, refined glassware, ashtrays and toys.
