MPs will discuss plan to halt

A proposal to halt "outdated" mega-projects to be implemented by some Myanmar ministries will be put to the session of parliament starting tomorrow, MPs said.

Once the National Project Bill for 2013 is adopted for discussion and approval, follow-up on the Union Budget Bill for 2013-14 will continue to be put forward for the sixth regular session of the First Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), said Saw Hla Tun, secretary of the Bill Committee.
The Budget Bill and National Project Bill will be highlighted for approval at the upcoming session. Some government projects were outdated compared with current projects. Some were not in progress for various reasons. Some factories were operating at a loss, said Aye Mauk, secretary of the Pyithu Hluttaw Plannning and Financial Development Committee.
Ta Ta Auto Plant in Pakokku Industrial Zone, for example, could not manufacture automobiles any longer after signing an agreement. And some heavy industries in Thagara Industrial Zone were the same. These factories were of no interest to the country and people now and should be closed or privatised, Aye Mauk said.
Some projects of the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and the Ministry of Construction should be revised and so should others from the ministries of Education and Health, he said.
The projects are to be debated for “equitable development” in regions especially in Rakhine, Chin, Shan and Kachin states. The most important matter is that spending of foreign currency by ministries should be scrutinised. Such currency should be spent on useful projects, Aye Mauk noted.
A proposal for the government to restore peace promptly in Kachin state will also be put before the upcoming parliament.
The Citizens Investment Bill and others are likely to be approved during the sixth regular session.
