Teerasil seeks way out of hole in Madrid

Thailand forward Teerasil Dangda cut a dejected figure after again being deployed in an unfamiliar role behind a striker in a practice match as part of his trial period at Atletico Madrid.

For his sixth day of training, the 24-year-old Teerasil was put through his paces with Atletico reserves and first-team players who were rested for the King’s Cup quarterfinal win against Real Betis on Thursday.

Teerasil, keen to secure his second overseas move after an illfated spell with Manchester City five years ago, took part in a training match of two 20-minute halves but was again played as a second striker operating between the lines. The Thai barely got involved in the play, often mistiming his runs and finding himself in the wrong position to receive the ball.
Teerasil, who helped Muang Thong United clinched their third title in four years by scoring 24 goals in 29 league appearances last season, was visibly disappointed at his performance when he conducted a video interview with Siam Sport reporters after the session.
“I didn’t play well at all today. I completely got lost with my positioning because they played me in deeper role that I’m not used to. I knew I would have to face a situation like this, and I need to adapt to new things in training, which has increased each day,” said Teerasil, shoulders drooping.
The Muang Thong player, whose trial was arranged as part of a collaboration between the two clubs, added that he hoped to get a chance to make an impression in his customary role.
“I would like to play as a main striker like I do for the national team and Muang Thong. Maybe then, I could make more of an impression on the coaches.”
