Pachyderms on parade

Pachyderms on parade

Khao San Road honours the pachyderm today with the "Everyone Loves Thai Elephant" exhibition, celebrating National Thai Elephant Day though perhaps not answering Leonardo DiCaprio call for Thais to give elephant more respect.

Organised by tourism fepartment, the exhibition reveals the better side of elephant life in tourism industry, such as the “elephant village” and mahout training. Stop over at 6pm at Khao San Road (where DiCaprio partly filmed “The Beach”), and make peace with our pachyderms through a photo exhibition, cultural show and elephant parade.

Shutterbugs on the loose
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is putting out a last call for entries to Thailand’s Travel Photography Competition. The deadline for professional and amateur lensmen to submit their travel shots is March 31. The topic is “Thai Festival”, and contesting photos must be taken by a digital camera. Post your JPEG photo (5-10 MB) at www.TATNews.org. The winner gets Bt30,000, while the first and second runners-up win Bt20,000 and Bt10,000 respectively.

Lanna culture celebrated
Phrae province celebrates the Chorhae Pagoda Festival on March 20 with a spectacular ancient Lanna parade and a series of cultural shows. This annual festival always brings throngs of Buddhist devotees and visitors alike to the 14th-century pagoda, the province’s religious landmark. Expect the endless floats of ancient flags and banderoles plus folk dances and music. The festival continues until March 26. Call (054) 521 118 or (054) 521 127.

Welcoming the ‘Wave’
Sukosol Hotels, the family-owned Thai hotel group, is scheduled to open its fifth hotel – Wave – in April. Comprising just 21 rooms, Wave is located beside Central Festival shopping mall in front of the group's existing The Bayview Hotel, right in the middle of bustling Beach Road. A Cadillac Cafe restaurant, seating 40 indoors and out, will serve unique lava stone grill dishes, while the Cabana Bar on the rooftop will be a perfect place to enjoy the view and chill.
