Sounds of the city

Thunder and wind haunt last weekend's Chang Summer Fest but good fun is had by all

Ten of thousands rock fans headed to Lakeside Muang Thong Thani last weekend to cheer and dance to their favourite bands at the Chang Summer Fest.
Many though were confused by the sound, which at times felt like it was floating in the air.
“It’s wind shear,” said a friend knowingly, a comment that one of the sound engineers later confirmed. But then outdoor concerts are always technically challenging for promoters, who need as much information as they can get about the wind direction and stage setting as well as likely weather changes.
As heavy rain had fallen the day before the concert, the promoter did distribute free raincoats to the audience. The rain mainly held off though the thunder was loud and the wind was exceptionally strong.
The venue’s covered area was packed with booths manned by music labels, the artists and music shops as well as the official product booth, which did a roaring trade.
Boom Boom Cash, the winner of last year’s Chang Music Contest for its slogan of “Live Like You Mean It”, kicked off the event with “Blur Blur” and the dubsteb number “One Life”. Singer Warissara “Mew” Apirakdechacha also jammed with Atiwara "Toon" Kongmalai on “Kraam” during Bodyslam’s show.
Big Ass was the first rock band to take the stage performing the single “Dan Neramit” with new singer, Daycha “Jeng” Konarlo. The audience joined in as the band swung into older numbers, jumping up and down until the cement on the ground was vibrating.
At the back of the stage, LED displays showcased graphics, pictures and letters along with shots of the band members on stage.
The girls screamed when Potato’s singer Patchai Pakdeesusuk appeared sporting a new short hairstyle. He rocked fans with “Thi Derm” and “Circle” before inviting them to sing along on “Kla Phor Mai”, “Rak Thae Do Lae Mai Dai” and “Khob Khun Thi Rak Kan”. The screaming went up another decibel when Joey Boy came on stage to rap on “Hoo Hoo”. Paradox surprised fans by dressing up as the costumes of characters in the Chinese series “Bao Wen Zheng”, with bassist Jakrapong “Song” Siririn opting for a half-male, half-female look.
They performed for longer than other acts, rocking their way through 18 songs including “Sexy”, “Choowab”, “Song Rak Song Yim”, “Mee Tae Ther” and “Suck Seed Nueng”. Promoter Yuthana “Ted” Boonorm joined the band on stage in the closing song, “Ror Dor Dance.” The country’s hottest rock band, Bodyslam, sent the temperature soaring with a high tempo set that featured “Saeng Raek”, “Saeng Sudthai”, “Yapis” and “Sticker”. Tanachai “Pod” Ujjin of Moderndog appeared on stage for “Ploi”, and also performed “Ta Sawang”.
Toon wrapped the concert with “Thang Klub Ban”, “Khwam Chuea” and “Cheewit Pen Khong Rao” though, much to the disappointment of fans, the band didn’t play their much-loved hit “Khid Hod”.
