'Vacation in Thailand' catches on for this long weekend

Thais who want a Visakha Bucha Day holiday break are overwhelmingly choosing local hot spots over international destinations, with almost 48 per cent of vacation seekers heading for the beach.

The “vacation in Thailand” trend is supported by searches on leading global travel search site Skyscanner.
In terms of most popular destinations, Thailand tops the list, followed by Singapore, mainland China, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Of the top five, Thailand-related searches made up 62 per cent of the total flight search numbers.
The Thai data also reveal that most vacation seekers want to relax by the sea, with beach areas, notably Koh Samui, Phuket and Krabi, making up 48 per cent of the by-destination search numbers.
As Visakha Bucha Day is a major Buddhist celebration, Chiang Mai is another in-demand spot, as 12 per cent of holiday seekers are heading to that city. In addition to its many beautiful temples, the city is renowned for its stunning scenery, Lanna architecture, delicious cuisine, and laid-back lifestyle.
“Our stats show that many Thai vacation seekers want to go to the beach to make the most of the last long-weekend break of the hot season,” said Grace Pobpabha Areerat, Skyscanner market development manager for Thailand.
“As we’ve had one of the warmest hot seasons in recent times, it’s no surprise that many people want to escape the city to swim in the sea, and enjoy cool sea breezes in Koh Samui, Phuket and Krabi.”
Besides the beach, many Thais are eager to take advantage of cheap short-haul flights, with Singapore proving as popular as Samui and Phuket on the most in-demand city-destination list.
