Wongnai Media secures funding for restaurant review platform

Wongnai Media, a Thai startup established in 2010, has secured series A funding from Recruit Strategic Partners, Inc (RSP), part of Recruit Holdings - a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm investing in innovative US and Southeast Asian startups.

Wongnai Media offers restaurant reviews on many platforms including Wongnai.com, and mobile apps on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Wongnai allows users to search for restaurants all over Thailand by location and category, with user-generated reviews being the main vehicle of its growth.
The investment will primarily help expand the company’s user base and community network.
Users are encouraged to upload their reviews and photos to the website. The service has become increasingly popular with over 500,000 downloads from iTunes App Store alone.
Chief executive officer and co-founder of Wongnai Media Yod Chinsupakul said that securing RSP as their strategic investor was a big step forward.
“Recruit Holdings has a track record of success running similar services in Japan. There are many things to learn and experiences to be shared. We are confident in this relationship and in our products. Our team continues to work hard to provide the kind of service people are looking for – accurate restaurant information, quality reviews – provided on a functional, fun and easy-to-use platform,” said Yod.
RSP’s president Akihiko Okamoto said, “We are excited to work with Wongnai regarding their engineering capability and bright management team. We expect them to become a dominant player among Thai online restaurant guide providers. We look forward to combining our know-how and experience with Wongnai’s local insight. Wongnai Media launched its restaurant review website and mobile application in 2010 and is now Thailand’s market leader among restaurant review applications. The company now has a database of 110,000 restaurants, which has grown 500 per cent since last year.
